I’m Makena, the creator and editor of Makeup By Makena — a beauty blog dedicated to empowering others through the art of makeup.

Ever since I was a little girl, I have always felt more me in makeup. Bare skin is beautiful, but the power of the perfect nude lip combo or a flawless, radiant foundation should never be underestimated.

I strive to empower others in the same way that makeup empowers me. 

I began this blog in 2015 to pursue my lifelong passions for beauty and writing. Now, I am 23, and what started as a way to share what I loved with others has developed into a digital magazine that has grown with me through high school, college, and my journalism career.

What is your skin type +

I have dry, sensitive, and acne-prone skin.

What is your skin tone? +

I have medium-tan skin with warm-to-neutral undertones. My Sephora Color IQ is 2Y08.

What is your skincare routine? +

My two must-haves are my CeraVe PM Facial Moisturizing Lotion and my Fresh Soy Face Cleanser.

What self-tanner do you use? +

I almost never use self-tanner on my body, but for my face, I have been loving the Lux Unfiltered N°12 Bronzing Face Drops.

What makeup brushes do you use? +

I use the Zoeva Makeup Artist Zoe Bag Rose Golden Volume 2 brush set as well as the Beautyblender.

What is your favorite type of makeup look? +

I love timeless ‘natural glam’ looks with an emphasis on radiant skin, and I typically stick to neutrals.

What are your favorite makeup brands? +

My favorite highend brands include Charlotte Tilbury, Dior, Hourglass, NARS, Too Faced, and MAC, while my favorite affordable brands include L’Oréal, Maybelline, Milani, Wet n Wild, ELF, and Physicians Formula.

How do I shop your favorite products? +

How do you take and edit your photos? +

I take most of my photos using my iPhone, but occasionally I use my Canon EOS Rebel. I edit almost all of my photos using my custom Lightroom presets.
