Best of Beauty | 2020

To end 2020 on a positive note, I wanted to take the time to share my top ten most used and loved beauty products of the past year. These are the best of the best and the products I can without a doubt recommend to you. If you are also interested in my skincare favorites, click here.

L’Oréal True Match Glotion Natural Glow Enhancer in ‘Light’ and ‘Medium’: I have mentioned this on my blog many times before, including in my 2019 favorites, and I am still obsessed with it because it is so versatile and makes such a big difference. You can wear this underneath or mixed in with foundation, on top of foundation as a liquid highlighter, or on bare skin for added glow. On me, the ‘Light’ shade is much more of a rosy highlighter, while the ‘Medium’ shade more closely matches my skin tone for a lit-from-within glow. I want to try the ‘Deep’ shade next to enhance my tan.

NARS Natural Radiant Longwear Foundation in ‘Vanuata’: Also featured in my 2018 favorites, this foundation is my number one recommendation for a highend, full coverage option. It makes all my redness, dark spots, and blemishes disappear, but it does not look or feel cakey. Even though it is not matte, it is not as dewy as some of my other foundations, but because of that it looks flawless until I am ready to take it off. This also has a great shade range.

Coty Airspun Loose Face Powder in ‘Translucent Extra Coverage’: This is the first loose powder I have ever used, so although I have nothing to compare it to, I have enjoyed using this, which is saying a lot consider I typically despite setting powders. This keeps my makeup in place all day and night. It is dry skin friendly, but it also prevents my t-zone from becoming oily. My favorite way to use this is to ‘reverse contour,’ so I apply a thin layer under my cheekbones — you can also apply this along the edge of your eyeliner or eyeshadow — to make my contour look cleaner and sharper.

Make Up For Ever Pro Bronze Fusion Bronzer in ’25I Soft Iridescent Cinnamon’: This unique gel-powder formula provides sheer but very buildable color and glow, and I love how it wears with minimal makeup looks. The best part about this bronzer is that it is impossible to mess up: unlike other formulas, it never looks muddy or overdone, and it blends effortlessly. This product is so underrated.

Milani Baked Blush in ‘Petal Primavera’: This blush is a cult favorite, which explains why it was in my 2014 favorites. With a buttery smooth formula, this feels like a luxury product but has a drugstore price tag. I love to look glowy, but I do not visible chunks of shimmer in my blush, so this finish — along with the warm, wearable pink shade — is perfect for everyday looks. Even if you do not like blush, I promise you will like this one!

Natasha Denona Mini Retro Palette: I did not play with eyeshadow very much this past year, and this was one of the few eyeshadow products I purchased, but it brings me so much joy! Although it features my favorite rosy neutrals, it also has two olive green shades that make my hazel eyes pop. The quality of these shadows is just as amazing as everyone says, and for me, this little palette has been so worth the price!

MAC Cosmetics Lip Pencil in ‘Whirl’: I used to think lip liner was completely unnecessary, but it honestly makes such a big difference — especially if you wear nudes /all the time like I do; it makes my lips look bigger, fuller, and more defined. I love this formula because it is insanely long lasting but not drying. Because it is slightly less creamy, I don’t need to sharpen it as frequently, so one liner lasts me forever. ‘Whirl’ is a beautiful neutral mauve color, and I definitely want to invest in more shades in 2021.

MAC Cosmetics Matte Lipstick in ‘Honeylove’: This has been my most worn and loved lipstick of 2020 — even when I was wearing it under my mask. When it comes to lips, MAC really can’t go wrong; it has somehow found a way to make matte feel creamy, and what more could a girl ask for? This is the perfect warm nude for fair to tan skin tones, and it complements virtually any makeup look.

Milani Color Statement Lip Liner in ‘Spice’: If you’re looking for an affordable lip liner that is just as high quality, this one is amazing. It is more creamy than the MAC one, so although it is more moisturizing, it is slightly less long lasting and I need to sharpen this more often. ‘Spice’ is a lovely warm rosy shade, ideal for everyday wear.

Maybelline Lifter Gloss in ‘Amber’ and ‘Ice’: As you can tell, I became extra obsessed with lip products this past year, and even though every shade in my collection may look the same, I have no regrets. This is such a great alternative to the amazing Fenti Beauty Gloss Bombs. They are moisturizing, plumping, and opaque, adding the perfect amount of shine to complete any look. ‘Amber’ is a medium, warm coral-nude that is more opaque, while ‘Ice’ is a light, cool-toned milky-pink that is more sheer.

Please comment your makeup favorites of the year below, so that we can all have the opportunity to try new products. I hope you have a wonderful day and an even more wonderful new year. Thank you so much for supporting my blog and me this past year — it means the absolute world.

A Wearable Holiday Makeup Look

Nothings screams “Merry Christmas” more than green and glitter, and this year, my holiday makeup look incorporates both. I typically avoid anything other than neutrals, but this shimmery green halo eye is beautifully subtle.

Nothings screams “Merry Christmas” more than green and glitter, and this year, my holiday makeup look incorporates both. I typically avoid anything other than neutrals, but this shimmery green halo eye is beautifully subtle.

{FACE}

To achieve a photo-ready yet comfortable base, I layered one of my favorite drugstore foundations with my favorite affordable concealer in a lighter shade. After applying bronzer to the edges of my face, I used a damp sponge to apply setting powder underneath my cheekbones for a clean, carved out look. Today, I actually wanted my blush to be more bold, so I stippled on one of my favorite affordable blushes in the most beautiful shimmering peach shade. This will complement the green eyeshadow. For a subtle yet stunning highlight, I reached for my new Hourglass palette.

Maybelline Dream Urban Cover Flawless Coverage Foundation

Maybelline Fit Me Concealer

City Airspun Loose Face Powder Translucent Extra Coverage

Physicians Formula Murumuru Butter Bronzer in ‘Deep Bronzer’

Milani Baked Blush in ‘Luminoso’

Hourglass Mini Ambient Lighting Edit – Metallic Strobe Powder in ‘Champagne Strobe Light’

{EYES}

After filling in my brows and brushing them upwards, I reached for one of my favorite eyeshadow palettes. For my transition shade, I blended warm matte browns through my crease, focusing on the inner and outer corners for a halo eye rather than a cat eye. To make the green pop, I lightly applied ‘Candied Peach,’ a warm coral, in my crease. Using a damp brush, I patted ‘Bless Her Heart,’ a shimmery olive green, on the very center of my eyelid, softly blending out the edges. It is 2020 after all, so I skipped the liner and falsies and opted for my a tried-and-true drugstore mascara.

Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Powder Duo in ‘Dark Brown’

Too Faced Sweet Peach Eyeshadow Palette

L’Oreal Voluminous Carbon Black Mascara

{LIPS}

To tie in the warm, peach tones of my cheeks, I layered three of my favorite lip products, which created a glossy, full, and multidimensional look.

KKW Nude Lip Liner in ‘Nude 3’

KKW Nude Crème Lipstick in ‘Nude 3’

Maybelline Lifter Gloss in ‘Amber’

Let me know if you enjoy this pop of color or if you recreate this look yourself, and please stay safe this holiday season!

A Festive Makeup Look for the Holidays | Green Smokey Eye

‘Tis the season to finally use that green eyeshadow! Today I will be sharing with you a simple and effortless makeup look with the perfect amount of festivity for the holidays…

‘Tis the season to finally use that green eyeshadow! Today I will be sharing with you a simple and effortless makeup look with the perfect amount of festivity for the holidays…

FestiveMakeupHolidaysGreenSmokeyEye1

For flawless skin, I am applying the Wet n Wild Photo Focus Foundation in ‘Desert Beige’ – a medium to full coverage formula with a matte finish. I blend this, along my with my Maybelline Fit Me Concealer in ‘Sand’, using a damp beauty sponge. As always, I fill in my eyebrows with the Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Powder Duo in ‘Medium Brown’. For eyeshadow, I will be using the Morphe Jaclyn Hill Eyeshadow Palette — an affordable, high quality product that I highly recommend! I am using ‘M.F.E.O.’, a matte pinky-beige, in the crease followed by ‘Pooter’, a matte medium brown. For the most important step, I am swiping ‘Diva’, a muted metallic green with cool undertones, on lid and blended it out for a soft, diffused effect. Lastly, I am using ‘Beam’, a shimmering champagne shade, to highlight my inner corner, brow bone, and cheekbones. After I coat my eyelashes with the L’Oreal Voluminous Million Lashes Mascara, I blend the Physicians Formula Murumuru Butter Bronzer in ‘Deep’ along the hollows of my cheekbones and my temples. I think neutral and cool-toned pinks complement the green eye look really well so I am popping the Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush in ‘Paaarty’, a matte nude pink, on the apples of my cheeks before swiping Milani Color Statement Lipstick in ‘Nude Créme’, a satin pinky nude, on my lips.

For the full tutorial, be sure to check out my instagram here! I have already worn this green-inspired look several times over the past week and also look forward to wearing it on Christmas Eve and Christmas day! I hope you appreciated this venture outside of my comfort zone. What is your ideal holiday makeup look?

XOXO,
Makena💗

Everything You Need to Know About my New Favorite Foundation | NARS Natural Radiant Longwear Foundation

After years of searching and sampling, I had finally decided that when it comes to foundation, full coverage and luminosity are mutually exclusive; however, the NARS Natural Radiant Longwear Foundation, which creates the impression of flawless yet natural-looking skin,  is my new favorite foundation.

After years of searching and sampling, I had finally decided that when it comes to foundation, full coverage and luminosity are mutually exclusive; however, the NARS Natural Radiant Longwear Foundation, which creates the impression of flawless yet natural-looking skin,  is my new favorite foundation. This product can be purchased from Sephora, Ulta, and the NARS website for $49.

IMG_8942

The Natural Radiant Longwear Foundation contains the standard one ounce of product and features sophisticated packaging: a simple, sleek glass bottle with a pump and black matte lid. This range includes 33 shades, all with various wearable undertones; I believe that this is a fairly impressive shade range and that it takes into consideration the complexity of each individual’s unique skin tone. I wear ‘Vanuata – Medium 3.5’, which is intended for those with medium to medium-dark skin and neutral undertones.

IMG_8923

Natural Radiant Longwear is a buildable, medium-to-full coverage foundation. Although I typically opt for a light-medium coverage and am not familiar with many full coverage products, this formula did not conceal as much as I was expecting it to in the first layer. One even layer provides a skin-like medium coverage while two provides full coverage. NARS suggests applying this product with fingertips and although this does extend the life of the product by preventing it from being absorbed, I prefer using a buffing brush followed by a damp beauty blender for both maximum coverage and maximum dewiness.

Unlike many full-coverage formulas, this one does not have a thick consistency when pumped out of the bottle or feel heavy on the skin once applied; it definitely feels much more weightless, which makes layering the product easy and effective. It blends extremely easily and does not cling to any dry patches or become cakey, which is very impressive considering how well it covers any and all problem areas. The one thing that I do not like about this foundation is that the pumps are so small and although this prevents wasting product, I do feel like I need at least two to three pumps to achieve a completely even complexion.

IMG_8920.jpeg

I have dry skin and although this product was less dewy than I expected it to be — especially when compared with other foundations I love, such as the L’Oreal True Match Lumi and the Maybelline Fit Me Dewy + Smooth — it does provide a natural radiance that perfectly mimics the finish of hydrated, bare skin. The innovative blend of fruit extracts, which includes raspberries, apples, and watermelons, is designed to promote elasticity and gradually smooth the skin’s texture for optimal illumination. I do not struggle with the appearance of my pores, but I do notice that when I wear this, my pores seem even more minimized and my skin seems more flawless and airbrushed.

Because this formula has a subtle, rather than intense, luminosity, it dries down and sets once applied, rendering it significantly more, but not entirely, fade- and transfer-resistant. Like every other foundation I have tried, this does get a little oily on the sides of my nose at the end of the day, but for the most part, it still looks polished. Although the brand claims that this will last for up to 16 hours on every skin type, I do not think this would prove to be long-lasting on oily skin.

IMG_8954.jpeg

Overall, the NARS Natural Radiant Longwear Foundation is extremely high quality and if you have normal to dry skin and are searching for the ideal luxury product to achieve a flawless yet natural-looking complexion for glamorous everyday makeup looks or special occasions, then I can honestly say that I 100% recommend this one! Whenever, I wear this, I feel so confident and truly love the way my makeup, and more importantly my skin, looks.

IMG_8957.jpeg

I hope you appreciate the time and effort I put into this review; I am really pleased with how the photos turned out. If you are interested in purchasing this foundation or already  own it, I would love to hear your thoughts as well.

XOXO,
Makena💗

Healthy Skin for the Holidays with Neutrogena

The holiday season is by far one of my favorite times of the entire year, but the cold weather combined with a few too many sweet treats can definitely be hard on my skin. However, I have been relying on the Neutrogena Healthy Skin Liquid Makeup to help my skin look and feel its best!

The holiday season is by far one of my favorite times of the entire year, but the cold weather combined with a few too many sweet treats can definitely be hard on my skin. However, I have been relying on the Neutrogena Healthy Skin Liquid Makeup* — my most favorite product from the brand — for years to help my skin look and feel its best! It is a high quality, affordable foundation with natural medium coverage and a luminous finish. During the Winter, makeup often emphasizes my dry skin, but as long as I properly moisturize before, this provides a fresh glow; I find that I do not need to wear powder over it and it looks prettier the longer I wear it. I also have acne-prone skin, and unlike other base products which can clog my pores or cause breakouts, I never worry about wearing this on a daily basis. Because of its adaptable satin finish and buildable coverage, I think this would work well with all different skin types. Its unique formula, which is available in 14 shades, contains antioxidants and SPF 20 to visibly improve luminosity, tone, and texture for healthier looking skin. If you would like to see some of my other blog posts where I talk about this incredible product, feel free to read my Drugstore Foundation Guide, my Glamorous Holiday Makeup Look, and What’s In My Autumn Makeup Bag.

Swatches from Left to Right: Primer, Foundations in ’50’, ’60’, and ’70’, Brightening Eye Perfector in ‘Light’, Hydro Concealers in ‘Light’ and ‘Light-Medium’, ‘Sunkissed’ Bronzer, ‘Vibrant’ Blush, ‘Fresh Papaya’ Color Stick, and ‘Mink Brown’ Eyeshadow Palette with shades starting top to bottom

Neutrogena was generous enough to send me all of the products needed to recreate the metallic bronze smokey eye and pink lip that celebrity makeup artist Amy Oresman created for Eiza González’s red carpet look. To achieve a flawless base, I am first going to prime my face with the Healthy Skin Primer*; this evens and brightens skin, extends the wear of makeup, contains SPF 15, and feels very hydrating. Next, I am going to apply none other than the Healthy Skin foundation* in the shade ’60 Natural Beige’ using a damp makeup sponge. I have repurchased this several times and if I could only use one of Neutrogena’s products, it would definitely be this because it is such high quality. Then, I am using the Healthy Skin Brightening Eye Perfector* in ‘Light’, a lightweight highlighting twist-up concealer, under my eyes, and the Hydro Boost Hydrating Concealer* in ‘Light’, a buildable stick concealer with hyaluronic acid, on any additional discoloration and blemishes. These last all day, blend out easily, and work so well with my dry skin. I am then blending the Healthy Skin Blends Bronzer in ‘Sunkissed’*, a warm matte tan color, under my cheekbones and along the perimeters of my face for an effortlessly natural radiance. For a pop of color, I am dusting the Healthy Skin Blush in ‘Vibrant’*, a bright pinky shade, on the upper, outer part of my cheeks. Both of these powders have smooth, pigmented, and blendable formulas, wonderful for enhancing a winter flush. For my eye look, I am using the Nourishing Long Wear Eyeshadow Palette in ‘Mink Brown‘*, a collection of four long-lasting and shimmery golden-bronze shades. First, I will take the second shade from the top, a light and shimmery champagne, to highlight the inner corner, the inner 1/3 of the eye lid, and the first half of the lower lash line. On the outer 2/3 of the lid and lower lash line, I am patting on the satin taupe shade located at the top of the palette. To achieve an intense smokey eye, I will build up and blend the third shimmery bronze shade through the upper crease and outer corner for a lifted and elongated effect. Lastly, for soft focus definition, I will line my eyes with the deep matte brown shade at the bottom of the palette. Although these eyeshadow are not super pigmented, they are buildable and blend so easily, which I really like. To finish off the eyes, I am using the Healthy Lengths Mascara in ‘Black’*, which strengthens lashes and makes them extra long. To complete this lovely makeup look, I am going to swipe on my MoistureSmooth Color Stick in ‘Fresh Papaya’*, a pinky coral shade with a sheer, shimmery finish and an extremely hydrating formula, which I absolutely adore.

10 Things I Have Learned from Beauty Blogging | 12 Days of Christmas

March of 2018 will mark the third anniversary of Makeup By Makena and after nearly three years of beauty blogging, I have learned so many priceless lessons, some of which I would be honored to share with you today…

10ThingsIHaveLearnedfromBeautyBlogging.jpgMarch of 2018 will mark the third anniversary of Makeup By Makena and after nearly three years of beauty blogging, I have learned so many priceless lessons, some of which I would be honored to share with you today…

  1. Never compare myself to others. With so many beautiful blogs, captivating blog posts, and dedicated bloggers out there, I am the first to admit that it can be hard not to feel inferior. There is absolutely nothing wrong with admiring the talent and success of others, but that does not mean I have to question my own talent and success. Everyone deserves to be proud of their accomplishments, no matter how small they may seem and ultimately, the only person I should compete with is myself because for me, blogging is about empowerment, not degradation or opposition.
  2. Never underestimate the importance of having purpose and goals. I believe that staying true to my values and character is a crucial aspect of blogging; working towards the fulfillment of my mission statement with deliberation and intentionality will guide each of my posts in the right direction. To all of my fellow bloggers, please never lose sight of the reason why you started and never forget your hopes for the future.
  3. Always be Honest. There is absolutely no reason not to tell the truth about a beauty product and I am always completely honest and genuine because nothing is worth betraying your trust. Although I would continue blogging even if no one ever read my posts, I am aware that my blog would not be the same without my readers and because I want my content be as helpful as possible, I always convey my forthright thoughts on products I am reviewing.
  4. I do not have to be perfect, no matter how much I would like to be. Although I am aware that a small part of me will never be completely satisfied with the lighting in my photos or the hook at the beginning of my posts, I have come to realize that as long as I try my hardest and am proud of the final product, I am good enough.
  5. Everyone has the potential for creativity. I know this seems silly, but for the longest time, I thought that because I excel at and enjoy academics and expository writing rather than dancing or painting for example, I was not creative. However, blogging has taught me that by definition, creativity is unconventional and constructing a rose gold smokey eye, styling intricate flatlays, and writing about my most loved eyeshadows are all amazing ways that I express myself.
  6. Pursue my passion no matter what. I started blogging because I love writing about what makeup I am loving and that will always remain true regardless of ever-changing statistics. I truly appreciate every single view, like, comment, and follow and even though I do have big dreams for my blog, it is important to do what I love and only produce content I am passionate about.
  7. Work harder than I ever thought possible. No one can realize how much work blogging actually takes until they experience it firsthand and one of the qualities that I appreciate the most in an individual is a strong work ethic. I love the feeling of being able to know that I worked as hard as I could and then found the strength and passion to work even harder; as a result, I now have each of my blog posts.
  8. Learning is never-ending. No matter how much I may know, I am always willing and able to learn more information and acquire new skills, and this ongoing process is one that makes me extremely happy. The fact that I can learn new things from my readers and other bloggers and in turn teach them new things is both comforting and inspiring.
  9. Never stop evolving. I am constantly striving to improve myself and my website in every way possible. Whether I am perfecting the perfect shade of blush pink for my links, experimenting with my eyeliner, or falling in love with a new rhetorical device, I always try my best to challenge myself and be better than I was the day before. Mastering the art of reinvention can be difficult, but as long as my core values remain the same, the alterations I make to my blog will only be for the best.
  10. I can care about people I have never met. Above all else, three years of blogging has taught me that I can care about people whom I have never met before. I can feel a deep sense of obligation to individuals whose names I do not know and I can hope that dreams of individuals whose faces I will probably never see will one day come true. So although I cannot guarantee that you will love a lipstick as much as I do, never for a moment doubt that a day does not go by without me loving and appreciating each and every one of you.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you for teaching me each of these lessons. I truly hope you found at least one of these meaningful for your own life. What has blogging taught you? I would absolutely love to know!

XOXO,
Makena💗

Winter is a very special season featuring a myriad of things to be excited for; Christmas traditions, cozy weather, and time spent with family are all obvious examples, but another thing that always brightens my day is, of course, the thought of makeup. This post is dedicated to five beauty products that help make me enthusiastic for the cooler months ahead.

  • Buxom Full-On Lip Polish in ‘Dolly’: To me, this lip gloss just screams Winter! It’s cool, plum undertones provide an effortless transition into seasonal makeup, especially when paired with complimentary eyeshadow or blush. Although I am not looking forward to the combination of this product with long hair and strong winds, this specific shade always makes me look forward to the following months.
  • Sephora Collection Colorful Eyeshadow in ‘Faux Fur Jacket’: Embracing the spirit of the season is as easy as can be when I have this sultry shadow sitting in my makeup drawer! The shimmery bronze hue with cool taupe undertones is stunning regardless of how it is layered — it is so pretty that it even causes me to be uncharacteristically eager to take a break from my signature warm eye looks.
  • Neutrogena Healthy Skin Liquid Makeup: During the cooler months, I want my skin to be extra hydrated but I do not always want to have to wear an extra dewy foundation; I love reaching for this one because it applies beautifully over my dry patches while maintaining a soft and natural luminosity. It has buildable coverage, lasts all day, and is compatible with all skin types.
  • Milk Makeup Highlighter: Cream highlighters are a wonderful option for dehydrated winter skin and this golden champagne shade that I received in my Birchbix is no exception. The natural warmth of my skin immediately softens it, allowing it to melt into my skin for a ‘lit from within’ glow. It blends like a dream with fingertips or a damp beauty blender and it is sure to add life back to your makeup look.
  • Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush in ‘Party’: This line of blushes is one of my very favorites because of its smooth, perfectly pigmented, and long-lasting formula. I received a mini version of this for my birthday gift from Sephora and I think this light dusty pink shade with cool, mauve undertones is so beautiful to wear in colder weather.

I hope you and your family had an incredible Christmas! What makeup products get you excited for Winter?

XOXO,
Makena💗
